History

After twelve years of school practice, Speech Kids was founded in 1995 by Crisler Lovendahl, M.A., Speech Language Pathologist and Child Development Specialist. The practice specialty was Sensory Integration and Related Disorders, including Oral-Motor and Feeding Therapies. Home visits were provided for four years until the Highland Park office of SpeechKids was opened in 1999. With a large commitment to the Floortime model, parents were in need of additional partners for more hours of "floortime" practice at home during the week.

To meet this need, Play Partners was soon established to continue in-home services at an affordable rate. Trained and supervised paraprofessionals extended clinical services to the home environment.

Concurrently, it was apparent that children showed varied performance in the clinic, home, and school environments. Classroom Connection was designed by Cris Lovendahl and Kari Becker to problem-solve the core factors of those variations, and to expand learning beyond a clinical 1:1 setting to that with multiple distractions. The Classroom Connection Curriculum is individualized and balanced across eight domains: Personal-Social, Self-Help and Independence, Fine Motor, Gross Motor, Auditory Comprehension, Expressive Communication, Academics, and Cultural Literacy. Through the Classroom Connection Program, developmental support for Special Needs Children was offered by consultants and paraprofessionals at an affordable rate.

A move to the Bannockburn location took place in June 2002, and the Clinical Consortium was created to invite master therapists from other disciplines, such as Behavioral Consultation, Recreational Therapy, and Music Therapy, to co-treat in the clinic.

Also, The Clinical Consortium was created to invite master therapists from other disciplines, such as Occupational Therapy, Sports Training, and Music Therapy, to co-treat in the clinic.

The North Shore Teen Center (also known as "The Apartment") was launched in September 2005. Tweens and Teens gather in "The Apartment" to learn and practice a balanced, healthy lifestyle by independently organizing leisure and social activities, snack preparation, work-outs, completion of a chore, and doing homework. Effective actions and attitudes are taught and rewarded through a formal Values Program. Teen Clubs simulates several after-school high school programs in which interest groups meet and are conducted by peer leaders.

The FOCUS Program was established to develop skills and strategies supporting successful learning in regular education language arts, social studies, science and related subjects. Students focus on organizing their binders, lockers and assignments. Each teacher's style and expectations, especially rubrics, are discussed. Students practice guided highlighting and annotations, outlining and summarizing key concepts, and extended response.

Jamberry Early Childhood, opened in Summer 2006 with a rich cognitively and linguistically oriented curriculum. Jamberry is an integrated program for 7 "little linguists" and 7 children with mild-moderate articulation, language, or social delays. A center for the preschool opened in Summer 2011 and offers programming in center-based learning: Writing Area; Block Area; Toy Area; House Area; Gym Area; Quiet Area; Learning Area; and Sharing Area. A Baby Room is also available for 0-3 treatment.

We are currently introducing three new programs:

ABA Connections offers programming supervised by a Licensed Behavioral Consultant with trained paraprofessionals in the Verbal Behavior Style.

Home School Connections offers consultation by LBS I certified teachers with Masters in Special Education to families who home school children with special needs.

Transition Connections offers consultation by a Parent Advocate to explore the multitude of after-high school opportunities including living and working, post-secondary, and vocational programs.

Together these programs can meet the individualized needs of clients ages 0-21.

Our Philosophy

Our approach is to design a well-integrated, coordinated, and balanced program addressing the needs of the whole child across eight domains. We intend to do so in a custom-designed environment with quality materials. Programs are eclectic, creative and highly individualized for each child's profile. Sharing our knowledge and learning from the community inspires collaboration across our programs, with other clinical team members, and with the child's educational and home programs. We believe that a child learns and interacts best when regulated, engaged, and internally motivated. Therefore our programs are sensory-based and relationship-oriented in addition to skill-building. We hope that our clients will love the time spent at our center. We intend to be family friendly and provide a comfortable waiting room stocked with refreshments, homework supplies, and a resource library. Families may also use our make-n-take center to create and/or order materials for home or school. We make every effort to schedule on-site, back to back sessions across disciplines to ease transportation demands. Additionally, we offer cash discounts for prompt payment and do not charge for any cancellations.
